About this piece
Moroccan homes had looms. Upright ones, usually in a corner, and the family’s floors and blankets came off them.
This wool kilim, made in the 20th century, measures five by ten feet. It is built of two halves joined across the center and divided by a narrow band of ivory zigzags. Each half carries wide stripes of red, navy and deep brown, broken by vertical columns of ivory filled with diamonds. Zigzag borders run along the sides, and twisted, knotted fringe hangs from one end.
The colors are saturated. The weave shows soft, even wear. Lay it down and walk across it.
