Earrings
A silversmith’s hammer, a pair of drops, a scale as small as a thumbnail. Contemporary earrings are made by hand in silver, gold, brass and stone, in forms drawn from older ornament. Hoops are hammered from silver; drops come in agate and glass; filigree comes from India and Indonesia; twisted gold follows the Fulani manner and Berber-style silver is set with coral-toned stones. They keep the scale and movement of traditional earrings at a lighter, wearable weight. Handwork shows in the slight irregularity of each pair and the soft polish of the metal. Framed by hair or a high collar, a pair does what one bold object does on an empty console.
