Antique Lanterns

A caravan halts at dusk, a wick is trimmed, and a flame is sheltered from the wind. Antique lanterns come in brass, tin, iron, wood, paper and glass. Moroccan lanterns in pierced and engraved brass with colored glass, Turkish and Syrian hanging lamps, Chinese wood and silk lanterns, Japanese andon and stone tōrō, Indian brass temple lanterns, European ship’s and carriage lanterns in tin and glass: all were made to carry a flame through wind and dark. Pierced metal scatters light in patterns across walls and ceilings; old glass softens it. Hung in an entry, grouped over a dining table or set unlit on a garden step, a lantern keeps its shape. Built for storms, it will manage your dinner party.
