About this piece

There is a Yoruba saying, often repeated, that twins are a blessing and a responsibility in one small body. Nigeria has some of the highest twin birth rates in the world, and a tradition of carving to match.

This ibeji stands about nine inches tall, a pale golden wood worn smooth in places, with a tuft of dark hair at the crown. Wide eyes. A beaded band at the hips, carved rather than strung. Feet planted on a small rectangular base. Twentieth century, Nigeria.

She looks out with great composure.

Give her the good shelf.
