About this piece

Herringbone on the head. Zigzags down the limbs. Hardly a surface left unmarked.

This slender figure was cast in iron by Dogon artisans of Mali in the 20th century. Dogon smiths held an important place in village life, and their small cast figures served as personal and protective objects. A ringed collar sits at the neck. The arms form open loops at the sides, the legs bend at the base, and a small knob tops the head. The dark patina has worn lighter along the raised lines, which lets the decoration stand out.

Six inches tall. Fine work, and a graceful way of standing in it.
