Yoruba Ibeji or 'Twins' Figure

Some figures lower their eyes. This one has closed them, or nearly, under a smooth, rounded brow and a tall, pointed hairline etched with fine lines.

An ibeji from Yoruba country, Nigeria, twentieth century, wood, nine and a half inches tall. The body is dark with a reddish bloom. Long arms hang at the sides, fists loose. The base is a many-sided block, plainly cut, steady as a stone.

Yoruba tradition keeps its twin figures close and cares for them.

This one has the calm of a figure at ease.
