About this piece

Centuries underground teach restraint. This head has learned it.

A terra cotta head from the Bura culture of Niger, made between the 11th and 15th centuries. Heads like this once crowned funerary vessels, set above burials as a quiet marker. The face has been reduced to essentials: an elongated oval skull, a small rounded nose, a narrow slit of a mouth, the faintest suggestion of brows. Five and a half inches tall, on a thick columnar neck. The orange clay is pitted, chipped at the crown, powdery at the surface.

Less face. More presence.
