About this piece
One large ringed eye, bulging under a heavy brow. The nose juts. The teeth are incised, and bared.
A Koma head from northern Ghana, 13th to 17th century, in terra cotta. Such figures have come out of mounds in the Koma region and are generally understood to have had a funerary or commemorative role. The face projects from a flat-topped cylindrical neck. A gray, earthy crust covers much of the surface, with the orange clay showing through where it has worn. Seven inches high, on a metal stand.
It looks like it has been somewhere. It has.
