About this piece

The horse rears on one hind leg. The rider leans back and pulls. Both, evidently, have an opinion about direction.

A small Dogon bronze, early 20th century, cast in Mali or Burkina Faso. Horse and rider are among the best-known Dogon subjects, tied to leadership, status and the founding ancestors. The horse’s long neck and pointed head thrust forward, its tail curving down, anchored by a single hind leg to a small round base. The rider has one arm raised high. Five inches tall, with a gray-green patina and brassy highlights where hands have been.

Rough casting. Lively energy. A fair trade.
