About this piece

Draw a person with the fewest lines possible. A Lobi smith did it in iron.

Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast or Ghana, early 20th century. The Lobi forged small figures for personal shrines, where they were associated with protective spirits. A flat upright bar is the body. A hooked loop at the top, the head. Two oval loops at the shoulders, the arms. At the base, the bar splits into bent legs and curled feet, and the figure kneels. Rusty brown, hammer marks left showing. Nine and a half inches.

Modern drawing, no ink required.
