Dogon Standing Male Figure, Based

Heavily encrusted, pale grey and green. He has plainly been somewhere.

The Dogon metalworkers of Mali produced figures for the household and for ceremony, often in simple upright poses. This one, 20th century, stands on straight, slightly bent legs, one hand raised to his chest, the other resting at his abdomen. His face is direct and compact: round eyes, a wedge-shaped nose, a pointed chin. The surface has the look of a long-weathered object.

Four inches, on a small black base. Look at him long enough and he looks back.
