Dogon Hsir Pin Depicting Standing Figure, Based

The blacksmith, in Dogon country, was no minor figure. He made things for the person, the ritual and the everyday.

This iron pin, made in Mali in the 20th century, puts a standing figure at the top of a long tapering shaft, arms bent, hands on hips. A crest rises over the head, and small ring-like bands mark shoulders, elbows and wrists. Below the waist, two open loops curve outward before the form gathers into collars and continues as a slim pin. Dark, even patina.

Nearly eight inches on its base. Elegant, attenuated, a little jaunty.
