About this piece

A crescent of bronze, swept up and back like a hook. Its surface carries a scale-like texture. At the junction with the handle, a small seated figure rests his arms on his knees.

Miniature ceremonial implements were made in many West African metalworking traditions, often as prestige pieces or for use in ritual. This one dates to the 20th century. The figure has a small crested head. The straight handle below is incised along its length. The bronze has a mellow olive-brown patina, with lighter highlights, and the whole stands just over five inches tall on its base.

A blade that sits down on the job. Rather civilized.
