Ashanti Chief's Stool with Airplane Motif

Early twentieth century. A cockpit, a propeller, a wing. Not where you would expect to find them, which is on a stool.

The curved seat is Ashanti in the old manner, the kind that sits low and keeps the soul close. But beneath it, the carver has built a small world. An airplane with a round wheel, windowed rooms above, a small figure perched at the back. Surfaces are tacked and tooled. Ghana, West Africa, about two feet tall.
