About this piece

Respect the blacksmith. The Dogon always have.

Dogon blacksmiths held an important place in society, and small metal figures were made for shrines, for personal protection and as expressions of the community’s beliefs. This one, iron, from Mali, dates to the 20th century and stands three and a half inches tall.

Arms folded across the chest. A pointed crested headdress, a ringed collar, a belt, bands at the ankles. The face is narrow, with a prominent nose and a small beard. The patina is dark and earthy, lightly textured, worn smooth where hands and time have reached it.

Iron, folded arms, no comment.
