Ethiopian Wood Jimma Chair

Three feet, never four. That is how you know a Jimma chair.

This one comes from the Jimma region of Ethiopia, hand-carved from a single piece of hardwood, unlike modern reproductions, which are frequently made from softer woods. Probably between sixty and eighty years old, it has a dark, handsome patina. Like every chair and stool of the Jimma style, it stands on three feet.

Thirty-six inches long, fourteen high. Hardwood, one block, one carver. A three-legged chair stays steady wherever it is put down. Sit and see.
