Loma Landai or Forest Spirit Initiation Mask, Based

The boys went into the forest. The mask went with the men.

Among the Loma of Liberia, masks connected with the men’s initiation society appeared when young men were taken into the forest for instruction and later returned to the community. This Landai, a forest spirit initiation mask, was carved in the 20th century. It is presented on a tall stand that brings it to eighty inches overall.

A long rectangular face, crowned by two upswept horns and a carved brow band. A narrow projecting nose, round metal eyes, a small slotted mouth. Light studs dot the dark surface from top to bottom, under a smooth, aged patina.

Plan for a high ceiling.
