Attie Terra Cotta Ceremonial Vessel

Fire, clay, and a bird with its beak in the air.

Ivory Coast, nineteenth century, terra cotta, fourteen inches long and thirteen high. A footed, rounded vessel with a ridged belly. At one end, a crested head, like a rooster crowing. At the other, an open spout, and a smaller spout stands up between them. The surface is a warm, deep red-brown with a gloss.

A ceremonial vessel, as the title says. We are happy to leave the ceremony to your imagination.
