About this piece
Six and a half inches of forged iron, folded at the knees and entirely alert.
Small metal figures like this were made across West Africa for personal and ritual purposes. This kneeling example dates to the 20th century. The long neck rises to a small head with a pointed crest, large ringed eyes and an open mouth. Both arms bend forward, the hands gripping a short object held diagonally across the body. Raised bands circle the upper arms and wrists. Incised markings decorate the torso and abdomen. The patina is dark, with pale green deposits in the recesses that bring out the crisp detail.
Whatever he is holding, he is not giving it up.
