About this piece
Water, beer. A great deal of it, and kept cool.
Baganda potters of Uganda made big, rounded pots for storing both, and their wares are admired for dark, burnished surfaces. This one dates to the 20th century and stands about twenty-two inches tall. It has a full globular body, a short neck and a thick, flared rim. A raised line separates the shoulder from a band of incised zigzags, and fine textured impressions cover much of the body.
The clay is fired deep black, with a soft sheen on the shoulder and lighter, earthy traces lower down. Put it on the floor, where it belongs. Enough room? Make some.
