Baule Blolo or Spirit Spouse Figure

This compact Baule spirit spouse from Ivory Coast was carved in the 20th century and stands just nine inches tall. Many 20th-century spirit partners were shown in Western-style clothing, a sign of the status and sophistication the owner hoped they would have. The head and long neck are painted red, with dark hair, painted brows and a small mouth. The black clothing covers body and arms, the hands just visible at the sides. Paint flakes around the feet and the round base.
