Baule Blolo or Spirit Spouse Figure

Hands framing the navel, as though introducing it.

This compact Baule spirit spouse from Ivory Coast was carved in the 20th century and measures eleven inches. A figure like her was a way of honoring and appeasing the partner one is believed to have in the spirit world. Red paint, weathered and uneven, lets darker layers show through. A dark coiffure with incised lines, carved scarification at the cheeks, a ringed neck and pointed breasts follow classic Baule conventions. A chalky white loincloth wraps the hips, and she stands on a small round black base.

Weathering has only improved her manners.
