Baule Blolo or Spirit Spouse Figure

The Baule hold that a spouse waits in the other world, and that the spouse may make their presence felt. Better to have a figure ready.

This blolo bian, or spirit husband, was carved in wood in Ivory Coast in the 20th century. Carving and tending the figure keeps the peace. He wears a bright yellow shirt and green shorts over red-painted skin, with a black cap of hair and wide, outlined eyes on a long neck. He stands on a round base, the paint worn at the edges and feet.

Nine inches tall. Dressed for the occasion, whichever world it is.
