About this piece
Hospitality has a posture. Hold a shallow bowl at the chest, both hands, arms long.
Figures with bowls appear in many West African traditions, associated with giving, hospitality and offerings to the spirits. This one was carved in wood by the Baule of Ivory Coast in the 20th century, and stands twenty-five and a half inches tall. The torso is slender. The head is long and austere, with a ridged crest over the crown, a strong brow and a straight, narrow nose. Below, the legs fold and cross into an unusual looping form above a round base.
The surface is weathered grey-brown, darker where it was handled most.
Offer nothing. It will not mind.
