About this piece
Thirty-nine inches across, and every figure holds hands with the next.
In the Cameroon Grassfields, stools carved with figures were associated with rank and kept by chiefs and titled men. This one, carved in the 20th century, circles with a continuous row of standing men in fringed loincloths, hands raised and joined. Between their heads appear animal heads with long horns or ears.
They stand on a heavy ring base and carry a broad round seat with a thick rolled edge. The dark wood is worn smooth in places, with lighter wear along the rim and base.
Rank, rendered in wood. Mind where you put your drink.
