About this piece
Found in Chad, two and three quarter inches tall, and wrapped like a parcel.
Small metal figures were made in the region for personal and ritual use, often in strongly simplified forms. This iron one dates to the 20th century and stands on a custom mount.
A rounded head. A body bound in diagonal, ribbed bands that suggest a garment or strap. A beak-like projection on one side, a shield-like oval against the other, and a lower body that divides into two long, tapering legs. The surface is crusty green-bronze with golden highlights.
Simplified, not simple.
