About this piece
An X in copper country. Whoever carried one did not intend to be cheated.
This handa, or cross currency, was cast in the 19th century in the Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Crosses of this form circulated across the copper-producing region of Central Africa, in trade and in important payments. Each of the four arms flares slightly toward a squared end, with a raised rim around the edges of the flat faces.
The surface is rough and pitted, soft green patina mingling with earthy browns and rust tones. Sixteen inches tall on its stand. Mark the spot.
