About this piece

A tall blade, and not a single enemy in sight.

This sword currency, sixty-five inches tall, is from the Republic of Congo was made in the 20th century. Across Central Africa, forged iron in standardized shapes served as payment, notably in bridewealth, and blades like this were made more for exchange and display than for use. The long, narrow blade carries a raised central ridge and flares at the lower end into a broad, kite-shaped spread. A small band of copper-colored metal marks the midpoint. The iron has a soft gray patina with surface pitting.

On a black stand. Tall enough to stop a conversation, if you let it.
