About this piece
Cloth mattered in Central Africa. It was dress, a marker of status, an item of exchange. So the tools that handled it got proper care.
This carved wooden textile hanger from the Republic of Congo, made in the 20th century, is just over four feet long. It is a smoothly shaved rod of warm reddish-brown wood that swells gently through the middle and narrows to a fine point. At the opposite end, a pierced, lattice-like finial is carved as an open, rounded cage set above a small collar.
A wall will hold it. So will a tabletop.
Nothing on it is hurried.
