Congolese Wood Textile Hanger

One length of wood. One carver paying attention to a thing nobody would ever call important.

A textile hanger, Republic of Congo, 20th century, nearly forty inches. Made to suspend and display cloth, a quiet household object. It tapers gradually and bows in a gentle curve. One end finishes in a bulbous knob incised with fine crosshatching and a small hooked tip. The shaft carries a deep brown patina, darker at its middle, softened by years of handling.

Handling improves wood. It does less for people.
