About this piece

Eight inches of pot, and a texture pressed into wet clay by a potter, years ago, or centuries.

The city of Djenne and its surrounding settlements on the inland Niger Delta supported skilled potters, whose wares were used for storage, cooking and ritual. This terra cotta vessel by a Djenne potter dates to between the 12th and 17th centuries. It has a full, rounded body, a short neck and a neatly flared rim. A raised ridge circles the shoulder, and below it a fine woven texture covers the surface. The deep brown is lightened in places by earthy deposits. A black ring stand holds it.

Calm, grounded and unbothered.
