Dogon Bronze Figure, Mali, Based

Horns on a human head. West African sculptors have never been shy about borrowing from the animals.

This small Dogon bronze, cast in Mali in the 20th century, stands four inches tall. Tufts of hair or ornaments flank the face. Broad nose, pursed mouth. One hand lies across the chest, the other drops to the side, and a short flared skirt sits above slim legs on a black base.

The surface is dark, glossy brown, spotted with pale green and gray. Miniatures like this were made to be carried, worn or kept on shrines.

Made to be kept close. Do as it was made.
