About this piece

Folded legs, long arms, hands on the knees. The posture of someone listening.

In Dogon miniature castings, the kneeling pose often conveys devotion and respect. This bronze figure was cast in Mali in the 20th century, made to be kept close, set on altars or carried for protection. The head is compact and blocky, with a long ridged nose and a projecting mouth, above small round breasts and a prominent navel. The fingers are clearly marked. Raised bands encircle the upper arms and wrists. Green and earthen encrustation mottles the dark surface.

Three inches. It fits comfortably in the palm, and seems content there.
