About this piece

Horse and rider have been Dogon business for a long time. Authority, on four legs.

This small equestrian figure was made in Mali in the early 20th century. Miniature castings of the subject were kept as personal or altar objects. The horse stands on four splayed legs, its head elongated and open-mouthed, its flank marked with a spiral boss and incised lines. The rider sits upright in a tall crested headdress, holding a round shield crossed with lines. The dark brown patina is worn lighter at the high points.

Four inches tall. A great deal of character, in very little room.
