About this piece

He leans into the ride, arms out, gripping his mount’s neck. He is not going to let go.

Small cast riders are among the best-known Dogon metalworks, the mounted figure suggesting status and the power of a leader. This one comes from Mali, cast in bronze in the 20th century, just under four inches tall. Raised rings mark wrists, arms and neck. A row of short ribs runs down the animal’s back toward a sweeping, curled tail. The legs are long and gently splayed.

A dark brown patina with spots of green, worn smooth on the high points. The mount’s face is long and serious. He is going somewhere.
