About this piece
The primordial couple sits side by side, arms linked. In Dogon art, it is one of the central themes.
The pairing of male and female is often understood to represent balance and union within the community. This bronze pair was made in Mali in the 20th century. They sit on a low stool, arms across each other’s shoulders, long straight torsos rising to tall crested heads. He wears a pointed headdress, and her coiffure is taller and ornamented. Both have small projecting breasts and navels.
The patina is an even dark brown, dry and earthy. Five inches tall. Unlike most couples, they agree on posture.
