About this piece

The smith held a respected place among the Dogon of Mali, and the axe was proof of it.

Forged and hafted in the early 20th century, this one was carried in daily work and, among the Dogon, as a mark of status in ceremony. The thin iron blade is boldly shaped. It has a crescent cutting edge and an openwork tang cut into a row of pointed, zigzag forms. A straight wooden handle runs through it, bound at intervals with fine metal bands.

The iron is dark and mottled, the wood dry and well worn. It stands just over sixteen inches tall on its base. A tool, a badge, and a good silhouette.
