About this piece

A horse shaped like an arch, and a rider with one arm held out.

Horses were long associated with prestige and leadership in the region, and Dogon smiths produced rider figures for shrine use and as signs of honor. This one is forged iron, Mali, 20th century, three and a half inches high. The horse stands on four sturdy legs, its neck sweeping up and curling forward like a hook. The upright rider has a tall, elongated head and holds a small object in his extended hand.

Rust-brown iron and pale mineral deposits cover the surface.

All line, no fuss.
