Dogon Iron Figure, Mali

On her head, a flat disk like a small platform. Whatever it once carried, she bears it calmly.

This little kneeling figure of iron is Dogon, from Mali, 20th century. Dogon miniatures were kept on altars and carried as protective charms, and kneeling female figures are a recurring subject. Her long, ringed arms reach down so her hands rest over the knees. Her face is calm, with heavy-lidded eyes and a broad nose. The surface is mottled with green and brown encrustation, worn smooth on the face and shoulders.

Four inches. A small figure with a large patience.
