About this piece

The Dogon were fond of the long line. Stretch a man until he is more gesture than body.

This tall, slender standing figure was made in Mali in the 20th century, one of the small metal figures kept on altars and as personal charms. It rises from flat feet on straight legs to a narrow, elongated torso. One arm hangs at the side while the other bends across the body, and a thick ring circles the waist. A pointed crest tops the head, with close-set eyes and a small mouth. The patina is smooth, dark brown, with a gentle sheen.

Seven inches, and it reads across a room.
