About this piece

The Dogon carve wood celebrated around the world. They also work iron, and this is the quieter half of the gift.

She is a standing female figure from Mali, made in the 20th century, six and a half inches tall. Figures like her played a part in shrine and household observance. The face is narrow, with prominent ears and a small topknot. A beaded collar sits at her neck. Her long arms and torso are wrapped in close horizontal ridges that suggest bangles or body ornament, and a plain apron hangs from the waist. The arms drop straight to oversized hands. The surface carries a soft, even patina.

Dignified. Dark. Delightfully direct.
