About this piece
Three inches tall. Beak like a verdict.
Birds turn up often in the long metal-casting tradition of Benin, tied to messages, omens and the authority of the court. This Edo bird, cast in copper in the 20th century, stands on long straight legs on a block base. Smooth rounded head. Heavy, downturned beak. A twisted wire collar at the neck, and chevrons chased finely into the wing. The patina is mottled, green and brown.
A desk is the right size for it. Look closely, then look again.
