About this piece
Wide stance, bulging eyes, a mouth that projects as if caught mid-sentence.
The brass casters of Benin City have long been among the most celebrated in Africa, and a modest piece like this carries their skill down to a small scale. Made by the Edo of Nigeria in the 20th century, it is bronze, three and a half inches tall. The arms reach down and out, ending in curved, hook-like hands. A cap of dotted texture, an incised V-shaped collar, shorts hatched with fine lines to the knee.
Deep olive-brown patina, greenish traces, large flat feet on a black base.
He is braced for whatever comes next.
