About this piece
The faithful wear it to say they were baptized.
Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity dates to the fourth century, and neck crosses are commonly worn as a sign of baptism. This silver Coptic cross, made in the late 19th or early 20th century, hangs as the pendant of a beaded necklace. The cross itself is a simple Latin form with gently flaring arms, on a looped S-shaped hook.
Dark beads banded in fine silvery dots make up the strand, with a few orange and cream beads near the back. The metal has a soft, warm tone from age. The strand is about ten inches long.
Faith, strung and quiet.
