About this piece
On the Gold Coast, the Fante companies called asafo each carried a flag, and every flag was a riddle. A saying, sewn in cloth, meant for rival eyes.
This one is crimson cotton with a small Union Jack in the corner, a reminder of who held the colony. On the left, a black figure strides toward a yellow key and lock. At the center, in a white rectangle, a dark animal, an orange frog and a blue lizard line up. Patchwork border, fringed edge. Ghana, twentieth century, nearly five feet long.
Work out the proverb. Take your time.
Nobody said the clue was easy.
