About this piece

Ghana, early twentieth century. A figure made to be looked after, and to look back.

Figures of this kind were prepared for shrines and protective use. Their power was renewed through offerings, and pigment and other materials built up on the surface over time. This one is columnar, just over nineteen inches tall counting the iron spike, with a domed head and a knob from which the rod rises.

Rectangular inset eyes. A small square mouth. The weathered wood is streaked with blue, red and white and chalky encrustation, and an iron hook juts from one side. It stands on a black base.

It will watch the room. You may as well let it.
