About this piece
In the late 1980s, a man in Ghana loaded a TV, a VCR and a gas generator onto his back and went looking for an audience.
This was the mobile cinema, a cottage industry that traveled from village to village showing movies. To draw a crowd, the posters had to shout. This one, painted on canvas in the 20th century, is forty-two inches by fifty-three. Ghanaian movie posters almost always give a lurid, colorful patchwork of images meant to attract, engage and entice. Grotesque, melodramatic, sometimes downright ludicrous.
Unfailingly memorable, all the same. Hang it where the film is playing, which is to say the living room.
