About this piece

Bread travels. In Ethiopia, so does the basket it rides in.

The Gurage made this one in the early 20th century, from leather, with a closely fitting lid. Round covered containers have long held injera and other bread in Ethiopian households, and leather made them durable for the road. Fourteen and a half inches across and four inches tall. A central disk and a small leather loop sit on the lid. The leather is deep reddish brown with a worn sheen, and long rawhide ties and a strap hang from the sides.

Hunger, well packaged.
