About this piece

In Igbo masquerade, the wild comes to town and takes a bow.

Animal masks appear widely there, as performers bring the character and power of creatures into the public arena. This boar’s head, 20th century, is cast in metal with a warm golden-brown patina. The domed head rises to pointed ears, round bulging eyes above pierced openings. A long snout runs down the center, incised with a ladder-like pattern, and two pairs of curling, ring-like tusks spring from the sides. The face ends in a flared oval with a beaded rim. Small losses and openings in the metal.

Fourteen inches, on its base. It has the look of an animal that knows you.
