About this piece

Fully twenty inches. Characteristic balance, as a connoisseur of iron would say.

The Kissi of Sierra Leone used such twisted rods as currency in bundles, and they played a central part in marriage payments and other important exchanges. Forged in the 20th century. The shaft is finely spiraled, running between a broad, pointed fin at one end and a small, curled ear at the other. The surface is dry and warm rust brown, with faint irregularities of the twist visible throughout.

Balance is the whole trick.
